CHAYAG ANDEAN FOLK MUSIC
Chayag dresses in traditional attire displaying the lively colors of the Latin and Andean world in costumes and instruments. The presentation incorporates an overview of history, geography, culture and interesting facts about South and Latin America while delighting audiences with the interpretations of many native Andean Latin tunes.
The workshop is divided into four parts and extends for about an hour.
The first part is dedicated to Latin American history, geography and culture and is interspersed with songs and dance.
The second part is a traditional story related in a lively style by Alex while background music creates a beautiful ambience
The third is an informal discussion about the many varied instruments that Chayag plays on stage. At the end of the performance Alex has an active period of music and takes questions from the audience and goes over anything that was not well understood or any special questions anyone may have. This interactive period usually indicates the level of interest Alex evokes in the public.
On completion of the workshop children and adults have the chance to see the instruments up close before leaving, filing past them on their way out. They also get the hands on experience with a few allocated instruments like "El Bombo" the drum, the goat nail percussive "Chajchas", flutes and rain sticks. Throughout the program, Chayag incorporates song and dances, encouraging audience participation in the true Andean tradition. Often volunteers are picked up from the audience to dance and play some percussion instruments.
It has been a pleasure performing for children and adults all around the USA, and we are often inundated with post performance letters, pictures and art work sent to us from schools and libraries that have thoroughly enjoyed the experience that is Chayag Andean Folk Music.
